The 2016 annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) was held in Washington, D.C. on April 8-12, 2016. The focus of this year's meeting was "Public Scholarship to Educate Diverse Democracies." A paper, co-authored by CEEP research associates Molly Stewart and Colleen Chesnut, and graduate student Anna Sera, "The role of faculty in K–12 policy implementation: The case of Indiana’s teacher evaluation law," was presented by Dr. Chesnut and Ms. Sera in a session on Program Issues in Educational Leadership.
"Assessing district-level effects on student mobility: A multilevel examination of student mobility in Indiana," was presented by CEEP graduate assistant Gina Mosier, IU School of Education faculty member Chad Lochmiller, and CEEP evaluation coordinator Thomas Sugimoto. The paper reported findings from a study of all students from Indiana public school districts and charter schools enrolled in 9th grade during the 2009–10 academic year.
Dr. Hitchcock presented each day at AERA. He chaired the symposium, "Advancing Mixed Methods Special Education Research" and presented two co-authored papers, "Idiographic and nomothetic causal inference in special education research and practice" and "How mixed methods research can integrate qualitative and quantitative approaches in special education inquiry." Dr. Hitchcock also presented the co-authored paper, "Math for All: Lessons learned from piloting a randomized controlled trial in a large urban district." He led a session, "What If Null Hypothesis Significance Tests Were Banned? An Interactive Discussion of Implications for General Linear Modeling," and presented the co-authored paper, "Teaching mixed methods research for development and evaluation of culturally constructed intervention programming."
Russell Skiba, director of the Equity Project, a consortium of research projects housed at CEEP, also presented at AERA. Dr. Skiba's three presentations were "Racial Inequity in Special Education: Implications for Federal Policy," "Schools, Rules, and Socialization Effects for Students: A Research Agenda," and "Public Scholarship in Campaigns to Change Hearts, Minds, and Policy: Discipline Disparities and the School-to-Prison Pipeline."
