On January 28, 2015, the Indiana Senate Education Committee met to discuss two bills in the initial stages of consideration. Senate Bill 443 would provide a number of resources and training to schools in order to help implement alternatives to suspension/expulsion. It also would eliminate attendance issues as a possible reason for suspension/expulsion. Senate Bill 500 is a "deregulation" bill that includes, among other things, the elimination of school improvement teams, bullying prevention efforts, and data collection on school safety and school discipline. Dr. Russell Skiba, director of The Equity Project and professor of counseling and educational psychology at Indiana University’s School of Education, was invited to address the bills and answer questions from the committee. Dr. Skiba has received national and international recognition for his research in educational equity, school discipline, and school safety.
