March 27, 2008: Perspectives on Indiana’s Key K-12 Legislation of 2008 CEEP staff have prepared a summary of the nine key K-12 education bills enacted by the Indiana legislature. A unique feature of this legislative summary is the inclusion of commentary and perspectives on each bill shared by eight representatives of statewide education or business associations. February 21, 2008: CEEP issued another issue of Focus on Indiana. This new issue looks at the Indicators of School Crime and Safety 2007 Report.

February 20, 2008: CEEP has issued a new Education Policy Brief, The Status of Male Teachers in Public Education Today. This brief examines the lack of male teachers in public schools, particularly at the elementary level. It also provides current statistics on men in education, adequate historical context to the issue, and suggests why many men continue to choose other professions. Finally, the brief offers a set of conclusions on the importance of men as teachers, and provides recommendations to address the recruitment of men to elementary and secondary classrooms.

January 31, 2008: A new Education Policy Brief; Using Data to Address Equity Issues in Special Education. Local and federal laws, and best practices, all place an increased emphasis on using data effectively. This Education Policy Brief offers readers concrete explanations and examples in order to understand disproportionality, as well as ideas on how to make data a powerful tool for describing inequity and addressing its causes.

January 31, 2008: A new Education Policy Brief; Latino Students and Disproportionality in Special Education. This brief continues the conversation on disproportionality, focusing on the growing Latino community within Indiana. Although there has been extensive discussion of the general topic of minority disproportionality, there has been far less attention paid to specific issues regarding Latino students and special education. This briefing paper examines patterns of representation of Latino students in various disability categories and placement settings with a look at local, state, and national data. In particular, the brief focuses on the implications of emerging findings of Latino under-representation in special education.

January 15, 2008: Models of State K-12 Educational Governance: Where Does Indiana Stand? This new CEEP Education Policy Brief examines educational leadership roles at the state level. The roles, qualification requirements, method of selection, and compensation of Indiana’s chief state school officer and the state board of education are reviewed and compared with models in other states.

January 9, 2008: The 2007 Public Opinion Survey on Education in Indiana, was released by CEEP today. Survey co-authors Jonathan Plucker and Terry Spradlin presented the results to the Indiana State Board of Education this morning. Among those results, the survey shows public attitudes are slightly down regarding the overall quality of schools in the state, and 64% believe state lawmakers are not doing enough to close the achievement gap among Indiana Students.
This is CEEP’s fifth annual survey to gauge the attitudes and perceptions of a representative sample of Hoosiers about public K-12 education in the state. The survey included new questions about the respondents’ preferred tax revenue source for funding schools, their perception of the value of further school consolidation, and their opinion of establishing charter schools where most of the instruction is provided over the Internet by a licensed teacher.
