New survey will measure involvement of students

Bloomington -- A new survey designed to gauge high school students' involvement in their education could provide schools with information that is not covered by standardized tests, Indiana University officials said.

Education faculty at IU said they expect about 100 schools initially to sign up for the survey, which will be available for the first time this spring. Schools will receive test results in August, in time for them to use the data in making changes the following school year.

The survey will not replace standardized tests like Indiana's ISTEP-Plus as the primary tool for school accountability, but it will give schools a more in-depth picture of how they can improve, said Professor Martha McCarthy, director of the survey.

The new survey questions students about their attitudes toward learning and their involvement in things such as writing papers, working on team projects and taking part in discussions. It will be up to schools that pay to take part in the survey to decide whether to make the results public.
