4. Write a one paragraph description of your program's mission and how it functions.

REBOUND is a nine-week social and study skills program with an emphasis on outdoor adventure counseling. Activities emphasize teamwork, decision-making, communication, organization, and study skills as well as improving motivation and self-esteem. The program uses both the traditional classroom and outdoor settings for social and academic instruction. Students most likely to benefit from the program fall between the ages of eleven and fourteen. The program targets students with low motivation and self-esteem who are, "quietly slipping through the cracks". They are frequently overlooked until midterm reports, grade cards, and or attendance reports send up a red flag. These students are often identified by: One grade level retention by the end of the third grade, Reading one year below grade level, Poor grades which can not be explained by lack of ability or severe behavior problems, Poor attendance. STUDENT SELECTION: Pupil Service teachers or Counselors refer students to the program as recommended by the sending school teachers. A representative from the home school attends the entrance meeting to convey teacher concerns and student needs. A REBOUND representative, the student, and guardian are also present at the entry meeting. All entrance meetings are held at Jefferson Education Center to provide the student and guardian, an opportunity to tour the facility. The meeting serves as an opportunity to define student needs, and determine whether placement in the program is appropriate. The meeting also provides an opportunity to set program specific goals for each student's Personal Education Plan and to process the necessary documentation. Student selection is a team process. REBOUND serves 10, sixth grade students and 10 middle school students during each nine-week period. FACILITIES: REBOUND is housed at Jefferson Education Center. Students have no interaction with children from other programs housed in the same building. TRANSPORTATION: Elementary and Middle school students ride their normal bus routes to their home school. A BCSC bus, arranged by each school, then delivers them to Jefferson. Students return to their home school at the end of the school day to ride their regular bus home. GRADES: Grades are issued by the sending schools. REBOUND students receive instruction in the following courses: Math,Literature/Reading, English/Grammar, Science, Physical Education, and Health. PROGRAM EXIT PROCEDURES: Students attend a transition meeting during the final week of the quarter. Home school teachers, parents, and a REBOUND representative attend the meeting to review progress, student goals, and needs. The meeting provides an opportunity for the student to become reaquainted with teachers, facilities, and routines. Transition meetings are held at the home school. Jefferson Education Center staff provide follow-up during the next quarter after completion of the program.

7. How would you best describe the primary focus of your alternative school or program? (Choose One)

A short-term placement of < 15 days for students who have been disruptive, possibly as an alternative to suspension/expulsion, or a Detention Center. The program keeps these students involved in education so that they do not lose out on instructional time while suspended, expelled, or involved with the juvenile justice system.

To bring students who have not passed necessary state tests, who have failing grades, or who are in need of credits back to the level of their peers. The school personnel works with students until they have reached the academic level at which they are supposed to be.

To deal with students who have had behavioral/discipline issues ("disruptive students"). The purpose is to remove these students from the traditional classroom to modify their behavior so that they can return to the traditional classroom, while at the same time keeping the students tied to an educational program.

To prepare students for life after school by helping them finish their academic studies and teaching them to be productive members of the community. The alternative school serves students who have withdrawn or intend to withdraw from school; are parents or expectant parents; are employed during the school day; or those who have not complied academically because of one of the three previous causes.
